I often ask this question to personal trainers that don't have business cards, don't do marketing, don't keep in contact with their clients and yet baffle why they are having a hard time making money.
If you are struggling to make ends meet as a trainer then it's time to evaluate whats going on in your business. Like everything else, building a business takes time. However ,you will pull your hair out along the way if you have no idea what you need to do.
First let me say, don't keep your Personal Training Business a secret! Tell the world! Don't rely on having 1 flier on the wall, business cards on the desk, or people seeing you walk around the gym. To be successful at personal training will mean being pro-active in marketing your business!
Take a look at my post 10 Habits of Successful Personal Trainers and ask yourself if you're doing these things. Also, take advantage of the information here on this site and never stop learning how to market your business.
Believe it or not, Marketing will be the key to your success. It won't be your great workouts or your 20 Degrees and Certifications. Your ability to dig into emotions, give people what they need, and draw people to you like a magnet is what it's all about. That's effective marketing!
So If you are an under-cover Personal Trainer it's time to break your cover and let everybody know who you are....
Breaking Free From Your Under Cover Operation
If your just starting your fitness business , then you probably won't have a lot going on that's on the top 10 list that I reference above. My advice to you is, focus on getting settled in your personal training business. Find your niche, and get an understanding of what you want to do. Get all you're forms, tools, and business cards needed to run your business. When you have that down, start focusing on your marketing such as getting your website and videos ready. Then move on to attracting clients.
Trying to do everything all at once when you are starting out is hard when you're not sure which direction you are going in with training. Take steps to build your business. Being organized will be of tremendous help. Write your plan and your goals down and execute. Believe me, it helps when you see what you want to do on paper!
